How to Make Festive Cocktail Straws for Your Winter Party

Image from A Thoughtful Place

It’s here! The turn of a new year: that magical time of fellowship and renewal. If you live anywhere near a polar vortex like we do, throwing a party in January means—for the most part—staying inside.

So your home is decorated to the nines with banners, glitter, and balloons; your crystal champagne glasses donned with charms—What’s that, you say? You only had time to buy some of those red plastic cups and many, many bottles of booze? Well, don’t you fret, dear party-thrower. I’m here to show you how to gussy up those drinks with nothing but a little washi tape and some straws!

Sure, you could just have everyone scribble their names with a black Sharpie, but then you’d miss out on the chance to showcase your crafty touch—and isn’t that what you’re known for?

There are dozens of tutorials out there showing how to turn ordinary straws into fancy flags that allow your guests to stake their claim on a cocktail cup. Depending on how large your gathering will be (and whether or not you have a defined guest list), you can personalize these flags beforehand, or leave them blank and let everyone write their own name.

All you need are some straws (paper or plastic), some colorful washi tape, and a pair of scissors. Couldn’t be easier! Or cuter.

Have a blast, stay safe, and Happy New Year!
