CAUGHT CRAFTING: SMPCraft’s Spotlight on NYC Crafting

Thursday, Flatiron building. DIY Upcycler doing a “Blind Date with a Book” for Twitter! The wrapping paper is from an old Trader Joe’s paper bag, the ribbon from a ripped Victoria’s Secret bag, and the stickers are from her co-workers’s recent office re-org.

What’s beneath the wrapping paper? Bet Me by NY Times best selling author Jennifer Crusie, which our Upcycler got at Free Book day and is one of her favorites!

Happy Pub Day!

Is it spring yet?! Well, no. (I don’t care what the groundhog said; the last 48 hours spent in sub-zero-degree temperatures did not leave yours truly feeling quite so optimistic.) But even though many of us are still stuck indoors, we can still bring a little springtime joy into our lives, and what better way to do it than with our knitting/crocheting needles? We’re proud to publish two wonderful, colorful books today that give you all the info you need to learn or perfect the art of knitting and crocheting.

First up is Crochet Flowers Step-by-Step: 35 Delightful Blooms for Beginners by Tanya Shliazhko.

Geared toward beginners, each of the 35 crochet flower patterns in this book comes with a clear, easy-to-follow photo sequence linked to a chart. Other books supply patterns, but only this one takes you through the process one step at a time, so absolutely no prior experience is required. Use them to add charm to home decor projects such as pillows, towels, or napkin holders, or gather them into a pretty corsage for a lapel or hat trim. You could even go flower crazy and create an entire herbaceous border! Once the seed is sown, you won’t want to stop making these adorable embellishments.

If knitting’s more your thing, you’re also in luck! On sale today is Learn How to Knit with 50 Squares: For Beginners and Up, a Unique Approach to Learning to Knit by Che Lam.

square 3 square 4

Learn a new stitch by knitting a square, following a clear step-by-step tutorial and chart. By the time you’ve finished the square, you’ve practiced the new stitch, and you’re ready to move on to the next one–quick and easy! The squares are organized according to skill level, progressing from basic knit and purl stitches to more challenging techniques, such as cable and lace. And at the back of the book you’ll find a handful of inspirational projects that show you how to combine your blocks for unique and stylish results.

Snag a copy of each today!

WATCH this Youtube video of the “BEST. KRAFTWERK. COVER. EVER.” via

This kraft projekt really does deserve respekt. Kudos to these kids and their musik teacher.

The school is Lemmchen Grundschule in Mainz and Lars Reimers is the music teacher who told his class that they would be working on a project for the next few weeks, which involves learning ‘Roboter’ by Kraftwerk, and making their very own cardboard robot costume which they’d wear while performing said cover version.

It’s Halloween and I can’t wait to see all the costumes that countless creatives have whipped up. If you still haven’t come up with your costume, watch the video. You’ll be inspired.

Have fun everyone and Happy Halloween!
